Low blood sugar during fasting blood work - not diabetic

Hi everyone,

I did some blood work recently while fasting for 8-9 hours. I did it because I’ve been having IBS symptoms. It shows very low B12 and my fasting blood sugar is 2.9.

I’m so worried, it’s making me very anxious.

Were you symptomatic with this blood sugar reading?

It’s very common to experience low blood sugar if you’re not diabetic and haven’t eaten for a while.

It’s very common to experience low blood sugar if you’re not diabetic and haven’t eaten for a while.

I was not symptomatic with this low blood sugar reading that morning when I did my bloodwork. And I realize it was 10 hours of fasting that I did the night before.

The thing is during the day if I don’t eat for 3-4 hours I do experience some symptoms, mainly anxiety and lightheadedness. This has happened for the last 8 years or so. I’m 31 now and in high school I remember feeling sick if I didn’t eat either. Like mainly hunger headaches.
My doctor wants me to redo my bloodwork, I’m so stressed out because I have a needle phobia so having to go in there again worries me, then having the results also worries me. 😢

Also it bothers me so much that my doctors assistant called me in a a panic about my blood sugar. She told me I should come in the following day. I asked her if she could talk to my doctor or about this and call me back. An hour later I get an email with a form for more bloodwork to repeat the test and told I don’t have to come in.

If she didn’t call I would have continued on with my life. I would have continued eating every 3-4 hours. Now I’m an anxious mess overthinking things, giving myself hypo symptoms even if I just ate which never used to happen before she called. My anxiety has been constant over the last month and a half. I didn’t need her phone call, I’m so upset and going to say something to my doctor when I see her next week. I find it very unprofessional that she called me the way that she did.
