beta blockers

hi ive just been given by gp some low dose beta blockers to try and slow my heart down a bit. the thing is im worried to start taking them cos i think it may slow my heart down too much. can anybody thats on them tell me how they work and if they are safe. and if you have to take them for life...thanx all
