Hi this isn't so much anxiety related but causes me a lot of anxiety after it happens. When drink goes down the wrong hole, my throat seems to spasm and close for about 15 seconds leaving me gasping for breath. Ne 1 experienced this?

Hi there eighties child,

I believe what you are talking about here is something quite normal for the human body. If water or something starts to go down your trachea rather than down your oesophagus, then the aim of the muscles in the trachea is to stop that water/food/foreign body from getting to the lungs. Spasm of the 'throat' is part of the body repelling the foreign substance from the 'wrong hole'. Do you also cough afterwards ? I, and probably most people here, have had this feeling now and again. How often does it happen to you ?

Yeah my doctor mentioned it to me, but didn't know how common it is? It dont happen often, only occasionally, but its terrifying

Well, now let me think, its happened to me a couple of times this year I would think...mostly due to the fact that I drink and talk almost simultaneously.

But then I can't breath 4 a while coz my throat feels like its closing, it happens to me when it goes down the wrong hole, then I cough a bit n then I start gasping like an idiot! Embarassing lol

Yes, honestly, EXACTLY that feeling....as if everything has clamped shut, nothing will go in and nothing will come out. I know it doesn't feel nice, but it is better than having water or food enter your lungs. It is the design of the body and you will cough and start breathing again.
